Extruded cubes, anyone?
I was looking through my morning blogs, news, etc, and came across BIG's winning entry for a prefabricated housing complex in Kuovola, Finland. I'm torn when I see designs like this; on one hand, I love the light, airy environment that they've created- it's a rendering, mind you- and if they can achieve this within the built work, then buy me a ticket to Finland! On the other hand, I look and see a pile of extruded cubes. I have a love/hate relationship with designs like this. With the right materiality they look modern and delicate and wonderful. If they're too heavy, they look like Habitat 67 in Montreal, which many like but I feel looks a bit heavyhanded- like the cube people are taking over Canada. Let's hope that BIG's project maintains its beauty!

Exciting flash from my previous life!
I was perusing Target's patio collection online, and I came across a surprise! We took on a few special design projects, one of which was an iconic modern Adirondack chair. There was no guarantee that it would go forward, but it looks like it made it. Its rare to find a modern take on this classic silhouette, and even more rare at this good a price, while still using FSC-certified wood. Great stuff!

Six months in, and I'm starting a blog!
Hello everyone! (or anyone who might come across this corner of cyberspace)
My name is Elizabeth, and I am a student at Columbia University's Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation- hereafter referred to as GSAPP. After months of promising that I'd get around to it, I've finally set up a blog- I'll use it to share some of my projects, interesting things I find, and general thoughts- usually focused on the world of design and architecture. I hope you enjoy!
